About
Filmmakers Rene Amador and Jocelyn Hsu (of commercial video house Automaton Creative) started NewMythic as a place for people to find the short films and videos they’d together through their production company. The centerpiece videos are Real Ultimate Power: The Official Ninja Movie, a viral hit of 2002 with more than 3 million views; and Vengeful Spirit, a 2005 award-winning samurai action short.
After making more than 30 shorts together, Rene and Jocelyn created Automaton Creative, a commercial production company, and have produced more than 250 commercials for clients like Verizon Wireless, Starbucks Coffee, Lego, Universal Pictures, Playboy, AOL, AT&T, RIM/Blackberry, Barnes and Noble, MoMA, Lisa Kline Fashion, and their agencies.
And just to preempt the most common email subject we get: We are not sword experts. We don’t really own or like swords or know real ninjas. We know actors who act like ninjas and where to find fake swords. We mostly just like the characters that hold the swords and the journeys they go through, not the swords themselves. However, it is also important to consider that any self-respecting ninja would make this same claim in order to protect their secret ninja secrets.

Rene Amador

Rene doesn’t remember when he first realized he was going to be a filmmaker, but he figures now that he’s been doing it for so long, he better keep at it or he’ll have to go back to the safe future-proof fallback career they destined for him in elementary school: Computer Businessman. Wait, doesn’t that just mean someone who makes money by using computers? Foiled again by an all-knowing Reagan-era institution. Rene also enjoys watching movies, talking about movies, using the word cinema, and playing video games.
Jocelyn Hsu
Jocelyn’s initial interest in film started in high school when Rene boldly claimed he was “going to be a filmmaker.” The nerd in her was at first disturbed, but then she realized she too was meant to pursue a career in film. Now she convinces people she’s a media entrepreneur at Food for the Moon Productions, and a commercial producer at Automaton Creative, having produced over 200 videos. She keeps it real by watching copious amounts of video (on screens big and small). She also enjoys being an avid video gamer, cooking & devouring real food, riding her bicycle in car-topia Los Angeles and spilling her guts on a blog.
